Infusion set management can have a significant impact on the effectiveness and safety of the therapy.

Changing your MiniMed™ infusion set every 2 to 3 days will optimise the effectiveness and safety of your therapy. Medtronic Extended Infusion Set lasts up to 7 days. The U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages patients to change their infusion sites and non-Extended tubing every 48 - 721. Frequent changing of infusion sites can help prevent:

  • Cutaneous (skin) complications2,3,4
  • Loss of glycaemic control2,5
  • Fatty tissue build-up (lipohypertrophy)4,6

Tip : An easy way to remember to replace your set is to adopt a routine and systematically change it on the same days of the week, at the same time of the day : for instance every Monday/Thursday/Saturday or every Sunday/Wednesday/Friday.If you use a steel cannula set, it is recommended to change it every second day.

INFUSION SETS SAFETY & EFFICACY - TIPS & TRICKS

Did you know that all MiniMed infusion sets and reservoirs have a patented MiniMed connection which gives you enhanced security in insulin delivery thanks to its secure locking system?

The patented MiniMed connection present on all MiniMed infusion sets and reservoirs is uniquely designed for more security. It possesses:

  • A secured locking mechanism that prevents accidental loosening of the set.
  • A leak-proof connection, easy to fit securely onto the reservoir with an audible "Click".
  • Vents built into the connector itself, so they are replaced every time you change your infusion set, reducing the risk of clogging.

Did you know that rotating the infusion site is a crucial behaviour for predictable insulin absorption?

Tip:Ensure good site rotations to aid tissue healing and insulin absorption by using a M or W pattern. Imagine an "M" or "W" pattern approximately 10cm long on either side of your belly button. Start at the end of one letter and proceed through the letter rotating the infusion set at each intersection.

Are you sometimes experiencing a kinked cannula?

You may want to try the MiniMed Silhouette infusion set. It offers the flexibility to adjust the depth of insertion by choosing the insertion angle between 20° and 45°. You can therefore adjust the depth of insertion so that the cannula does not reach your muscular tissue. If you are currently using a vertical insertion set with a long cannula (8 or 9mm), you may also want to try using a shorter cannula-length of 6mm.

Have you ever experienced air bubbles in the tubing?

If you experience this then you should disconnect the tubing and prime out the air. Next reconnect the tubing to the set ensuring that connections are tight and always make sure the insulin is at room temperature before use.

Do you sometimes feel you need to carry too many supplies in your pocket/bag?

You may want to try the MiniMed Mio infusion set. This all-in-one infusion set is packaged in a compact rigid box containing both the set and an intergrated serter. It is easy to carry with you or in your bag.

Have you sometimes experienced infusion set dislodging due to water activities, sweating or intense physical activity?

You may want to use skin preparation wipes, or an over-tape adhesive to reinforce the adherence.
